- OK, thought I'd clarify this one because I have one of the
- defective ones. Mine's a Power hoever, but it's the same thing. My serial
- number (on the deffective one) is: 4592321. If your serial number is very
- close to that, it's ok to be worried. However, this problem will only
- occur on one tenth of one percent of all modems made before 05/95 (ie, 1
- in 1000). In order for it to happen, you need to turn on your system
- followed by your modem, and you also need to have a certain type of
- serial cable and a certain kind of controller card. What the defective
- is, is the modem will send a power surge through the serial cord and fry
- your controller- lovely, huh? =). That's what I get for buying a modem
- right when it comes out. They sent me a new modem within 2 days of
- calling, and paid for shipping in both ways- FedEx. Very good service.
